I was invited back to speak at a September 11th Memorial Service, 2 years after the event, and 2 years after I had first shared the patriotic poem, “The Eagle Still Flies.”

Even two years later, we were still at war, and it gave me the opportunity to share some thoughts on liberty and patriotism with a new audience. So much of what we shared, was just as true two years later, as it is today. God bless you, God bless our men and women proudly serving our Country around the earth. Daniel Webster said that “God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it.” It simply can’t be overstated that freedom is not free, nor ever has been. One of my favorite quotes regarding Military Service is this: “If you don’t stand behind our troops, you are welcome to stand in front of them.”

Tonight, I’d like to share with you something that I shared with you for the first time, almost one year ago, during a Memorial Service, to commemorate the first anniversary of 9-11. It’s hard to believe that that was one year ago, and even harder to believe that it has been almost 2 years since the attacks on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.
I’m going to share a few thoughts about Patriotism. First, it’s ok to love your country. It’s ok to love the United States of America. Yes-love God first-remember, it’s always been “God and Country”. This nation was founded on Godly principles, by men who readily admitted they were trying to do, and stay within, God’s will. I can even remember learning in school that the Pilgrims came to this country, that this country was founded-first and foremost-for religious freedom.
I believe that the greatest wave of patriotism in our lifetimes, and certainly since World War II, occurred after 9-11. After growing up in the South, I have talked many times about the fact that there are still strong feelings toward the North, from some “old schoolers” still living in the South. The way it is best described is that there are still many folks down there who are still “fighting the Civil War.”  This is true for some, but I’ve always said that “if they ever attacked even New Jersey, we’d be the first to get in line to fight.” Well, they just about did. Those weren’t just airplanes; they were guided missiles that were aimed to kill Americans.

It seems that after 9-11, there was such a huge wave of patriotism that extended everywhere, and I don’t know if the feelings are as strong now. There is always the initial “honeymoon” type period, and then over time, as we get back to our jobs, and the pressures of everyday life, that maybe we loose some of the enthusiasm that we had before. But let me make one thing clear:
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are ... still ... at ... war. American men and women are still serving-and dying-over-seas. American military personnel are stationed around the globe, and we all read the newspaper, or hear the news every day. For these American-and allied forces- the war is just as real now, as the first day.

I believe that each one of us, every morning, should hit our knees, and yes, thank God for salvation, but also should thank God for the fact that He allows us to live in The United States Of America. Most of us have no idea how blessed we are just to be alive in this country. Just to be able to come to a place like this-in public- and worship God. Just to be free. Just to be free.
Why does there have to be war? Well, consider this: As born again Christians, full of the Holy Ghost, Paul said it best when he described a war that we all have ... inside ourselves. This is a war, a real battle for our lives, our souls, and it’s raging inside us every day. How then, can we expect a lost world to behave toward each other?

Let me share just one story about “the world out there.” First, estimates I’ve read show that there were more people killed for their faith-as martyrs- in the last century, as in all the previous centuries combined.
A couple of months ago, I attended a conference hosted by the Connecticut Anti-Slavery Group. They’re purpose is to fight against slavery world-wide. I thought what some of you may be thinking? Why do we need such a group? After all, slavery was abolished. Slavery was abolished ... only here ... Here’s a statistic that is staggering: In the world today, there are 27 million ... that’s million with an “m”... 27 million men, women, and children, who are slaves. They are tortured, abused, and killed. The guest speakers were a husband and wife ministry team from just outside Boston. I describe them as modern day Moses’, as they have been able to free thousands of slaves from captivity. Most of their work is done in the area of Sudan. As they described the treatment of slaves, the entire auditorium was filled with gasps of “Jesus” and “Oh my God!” In Sudan, a cow is worth 100.00. You can buy a cow for 100.00. In Sudan, a man, woman, or child is worth ... 60.00 ... A cow is worth almost double what a human being is. What this couple does is raise money, and then they purchase slaves through the black market, and then release them. I thought about Christians dealing with the black market; then I remembered how many Bibles have been distributed through the black market.

Now, I’m going to give you a metaphor with The United States and the world, Us as Christians and the world, and Jesus and the world:
Jesus is the light of the world, the hope of the world.
The United States is a beacon of light, of hope, to the entire world. You have heard this many times since 9-11.
We as Christians are that beacon of light, of hope, to our individual world. Our family, friends, people we work with, etc.

Why do people hate the United States so much? As you know, just try to stand up for what is right, try to live right, always say and do the right thing, be “different,” and you’ll have enemies soon enough-family, friends, people you work with ... even an entire country.
Let me explain with scripture:
In Luke 6:7, Jesus healed the man’s withered hand, in the synagogue, on the Sabbath. “They watched him closely.” Either Jesus, or someone trying to be like Jesus, will be watched closely. When Jesus had healed the man, Luke 6:11 says, “they were filled with madness/rage and discussed with each other what they might do to Jesus.” The word “madness” here means “irrational fury.” Think back on our lives, and think about how we acted while we were in sin. How irrationally we acted.
Question: How much sense does it make to try to kill “the Lord of glory?”
Question: How much sense does it make for a mostly “third-world” country to attack the most powerful nation on earth?
Never forget that our freedom came by a great price.
Our Christian Freedom/Liberty came with the greatest price of all.

I went to Ground Zero for the first time on July 12th. I had never seen the World Trade Center before. It is hard to describe the atmosphere. You look at the faces, and see tears, and expressions that seem to say, “I don’t know how to act.” The area is surrounded by fence, and the “big hole” does not exist anymore. There is a concrete floor, and you can see the beginning of construction. The one image that stays with you is the cross in the center. It is a large steel crossbeam, in the shape of a cross, standing all alone. I have been told that when they cleared the debris, at the very bottom of the pile, was this steel cross, just standing there, beneath hundreds of tons of death and destruction. They decided to leave the cross there, where it had apparently landed on 9-11. I tried to ask the vendors, who were selling “Picture Books” of 9-11, and found it somehow disconcerting that no one I asked knew the story behind the Cross, and how very little English these vendors understood at all. I will never forget leaving Ground Zero, and 45 minutes later, I was safe inside Madison Square Garden, listening to The National Anthem.

Now, I’d like to again share with you a new Patriotic Poem/Song for America, “The Eagle Still Flies (Over Star Spangled Skies).” When I wrote the poem, my intention was for it to become a new song, a new “Anthem” for America, to uplift and encourage not just us here on American soil, but for those men and women fighting overseas. Honestly, at the time, I did not think that the war would last this long. I feel like that is even more reason for this poem to go out. I have no doubt that God gave me the song.

Now, here is my original introduction to “The Eagle Still Flies,” which I would dramatically read before the poem. Keep in mind the time which this was presented during; the memories of the terrorist attacks on our country were still so fresh in our minds.
This is the first time the “live” introduction has appeared in print:

2 Corinthians 3:17 says that where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
When I see the word, “liberty” or “freedom” I see Jesus’ name written all over it.
Thomas Paine said, in 1776, that “The cause of America is, in a great measure, the cause of all mankind. Had it not been for America, there had been so such thing as freedom left in the whole universe.”

On September 11, 2001, evil called …
Interesting … 911 …
And, an entire nation answered

We went from a nation known for rock ‘n roll
To take pride in Plymouth Rock, and “Let’s roll!”

We went from a place know as “Ground Zero”
To a place known as “Ground Hero”

Let the word go forth
Through time and space
The United States of America is the center of peace and strength
Tranquility base is here
The eagle has landed
And the eagle still flies
Under star spangled skies

And, now …
A new patriotic poem for America …
“The Eagle Still Flies (Under Star Spangled Skies) …

THE EAGLE STILL FLIES (UNDER STAR SPANGLED SKIES)

A NEW ANTHEM FOR AMERICA

The sun came up this morning

Over a land still brave and free

Its borders still strong and standing

Against all tyranny

It seems just yesterday-I remember so well

As the morning dew slept on the towers that fell

The skies were so clear, the sunlight so bright

But evil’s conscience couldn’t sleep

And was awake through the night

And everyone can recall when they first heard the news

And no one was sure how much more we would lose

Then, through the ashes, the smoke, and the flame

We realized this country would never be the same

The towers left standing

Are the towers within

The twin towers of liberty and freedom, my friend

Perched on top of these towers, the eagle will rise

To bring peace and justice to the world’s crying eyes

And the eagle still flies

Under star spangled skies

And we still trust in God

But we won’t spare the rod

And we still say the pledge

Faith and courage

Give us the edge

And the eagle will soar

‘Cause we’re free evermore

From the hills to the shore

Yes! We’re free evermore

The eagle still flies under star spangled skies

And our hope never dies

‘Cause the eagle still flies

 Nations will rise

Buildings will fall

But there’s still one nation standing

That will answer the call

And we won’t run and hide

In our flag we still take pride

‘Cause freedom will win

Liberty we’ll defend

Through the smoke, through the fire

The wings of justice fly higher

Over canyon and tundra and treetops and sand

The fires of freedom’s victory have been fanned

From the streets on our soil

To lands across the sea

On freedom’s wings we will ride

For the whole world to see

The strength, the power, of liberty

And the eagle still flies

Under star spangled skies

And we still trust in God

But we won’t spare the rod

And we still say the pledge

Faith and courage give us the edge

And the eagle will soar

‘Cause we’re free evermore

From the hills to the shore

Yes! We’re free evermore

The eagle still flies

Under star spangled skies

And our hope never dies

‘Cause the eagle still flies
