People often ask me what I would say as part of a Pastor Appreciation Day Service.
I found a page of notes I had taken to make a presentation to my Pastor, on Pastor Appreciation Day, several years ago. This was the first time the words of “Why, Pastor, Why” were ever engraved onto a plaque.
I share this with you so that perhaps you may glean some words to share with your Pastor. I also include part of a story I shared with the congregation, which I hope you will enjoy:
“For Pastor Appreciation Day, we all want you to know how wonderful and special a man you are, and how blessed we are that you are the man God chose to be our Pastor. You’ve touched all our lives in so many ways, and we want you to know how deeply we love and honor you and appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made for us.
We all have stories of how you’ve made a difference in our lives, and I’d like to share just one example:
Just this last April, on a Tuesday night, April 27th … we had just started coming to church here … It was only the previous Saturday, April 24th, that Carol had accepted Jesus as her Savior … in the center of our kitchen … Pastor and Sister Leite came to visit that Tuesday night, and as always, with me being from Georgia and Carol being from Connecticut, the question is always asked about how we met. I explained that, after talking with Carol for months on the telephone (mutual friends had arranged our initial phone call), I had never met her. When she finally came to Georgia, I went to Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, with friends, to greet her for the first time. I had told Carol that “I would be there with bells on.” When I arrived, sure enough, I was wearing “jingle bells” (one of those bell-straps they hang on business doors) underneath my jacket.
I also mentioned that, as Carol had just gotten saved just 3 days earlier, I wanted to get her a new Bible, but couldn’t afford a nice one like I wanted to give her.
Anyway, we had a nice visit with the Pastor and his wife, and told them we would be there for Wednesday night service, the next night. The last thing the Pastor said was, “Great … I’ll be there with bells on.”
We walked into the church on Wednesday night, and two remarkable things happened. Pastor Leite was in front, and when he saw us enter, I’ll never forget the look on his face.
But, it was what he did next that amazed me, and showed the type of man he really is. Of course, he was wearing a suit … he reached under his jacket … and, attached on a string … was a set of jingle bells!!! “See, with bells on!” Then, he and Sister Leite walked up, greeted us … and presented Carol with a brand new Bible.
2 years ago, in Georgia, God gave me “Why, Pastor, Why” for Pastors all over the world. But, as I stand here this morning, I’m not so sure that this was not given to me, just for you …
In closing, as glad as I am that I moved to this city, I am just as blessed that you decided to move to this city.”
That was many years ago, but I still believe two very real things:
That the office of Pastor is the highest office in the land. For the people choose the president. God chooses the Pastor.
And, the greatest gift God gives to the local church is their Pastor.
